Buscar ovejas (2024) Search for sheep (2024)

Yo salgo a buscarlas.

The flocks take refuge from the winter cold in the Casa de Campo. Its paths are walked by hikers, dog walkers, cruisers and runners. The sheep look for green pastures. Some die just after giving birth; others lick their lambs while the cord still hangs from them. Unaccompanied migrant kids and bullfighters meet in a forest clearing as the sun goes down. Cyclists show off their neon jerseys and sex workers do their make-up in a rear-view mirror. A gardener protects the smallest ducklings on the lake by hitting the adults, as neon as the cyclists, with a stick. The mastiffs take a nap beside the flock. The sheep bleat, the storks clatter and the tigers roar. The cable car no longer flies and the sheep hide.

I go out to look for them.

Search for sheep is a drifting project through Madrid’s Casa de Campo, where a flock of sheep spends half the year grazing and breeding, linked to a school for shepherds. This proposal turns that search into an excuse to use walking as an evasive technique in a city of suffocating rhythms.
