La tormenta es la muerte — Jesús García

La tormenta es la muerte (2021) The storm is the death (2021)

I often imagine my notebooks after I am dead. I imagine every word in my own handwriting trapped without me in those little books. And I also imagine some loved ones snooping around, or reading respectfully, coming across their own name traced by my dead hand, the ill-judged voice of an argument, the cheeky spelling mistake of a text distracted by wine. Talking about loss inevitably means also talking about our own departure. Looking the void in the eye inevitably means observing your own volume occupying space. And the mark of its weight on the cushions of a sofa, the print left on the mirror, the inevitable inheritance of a furrow on the brow. The memory of the last embrace, a fingerprint pressed onto the cheek as if red-hot; almost eternal. Organic remains of a life that ended. Today I keep trifles from another time as treasures. I fantasise about finding the marks that confirm the real in what is no longer visible. The worn touch of the wood of the table where he worked, just where he rested his right elbow—there it is. His notes, his pen, his old calculator with its symbols worn away from so much pressing; just where he left it, in the right position. This project is a kind of collection of memories, even of those I have not lived. Images of the calm after the storm, of the silence of the wreckage, broken wood and creaking in the night, the permanent pause of the fallen centuries-old holm oak, a blow to the face of an old summer shade, the shelter and happy refuge I was once lucky enough to inhabit. Now firewood, now sawdust and dust, a perennial memory in my head like the long-lost leaves of yesteryear. This book is made of nostalgia, but with the certainty that the lightning of the most violent storm cannot break buried roots; that even if the tree falls, the rootedness persists and burns down to the tips of these fingers that today give life to its memory.

In January 2021, a huge and unprecedented snowfall, named Filomena, struck the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, leaving behind a landscape of devastated trees. Months earlier, in August 2020, my father had died in Madrid after fighting cancer.

It was while walking through those devastated landscapes that I was able to establish a relationship between the broken trees and my father’s death.

I search for my father in an intimate way through his everyday objects. A pencil, a calculator, a keyring or the neck of a guitar become landscapes in which I look for his hairs, the remains of his nails or the grease of his hands.

These objects burst into landscapes where, like my father, hundreds of trees have fallen after an unexpected and violent storm.

Approaching loss from a sensitivity towards matter and the testimony of the trace, two photographs of my father appear, digitised on their reverse side, in which the material that holds the image, paper, is the same one that comes from the trees.
