Verano del 78 (2021) Summer of ’78 (2021)

The family album is an exciting place to visit and get lost in for a few hours. Sometimes I stop at a picture of my mother, my father or an uncle or aunt when they were the age I am now, and I wonder what was going through their heads. I look at the expressions on their faces, the shape of their hair or the position of a hand, as if that might give me the chance to understand them.

What would it have been like to meet my parents at my age? Would we have been friends? This small project fantasises about that idea through a set of doctored Polaroids in which I have slipped, like a timeless traveller, into their summer plans along the Mediterranean coast. Polaroids feel more like objects than images and, when we hold one, it never occurs to us that it might be a montage.

After a few hours of Photoshop, my conclusion is that we would have been mates, and that my father and I would have played guitar together in the circle, side by side.
